HEADLINES

SPONSOR: Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.)

LAST ACTION: 07/25/2008- Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security hearing on 07/29/2008 at 4:30PM canceled.

First there was "Cocaine" the energy drink released last year. Now "Meth Coffee," the latest product named after a drug, is aimed at enticing energy addicts.

"Meth Coffee" doesn't actually contain meth, but that's not stopping Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan from putting her foot down. She is banning the sale of "Meth Coffee" in the state of Illinois, insisting the drink glorifies drug use.

BBBS, Partnership for a Drug-Free America to launch a public awareness campaign to reduce methamphetamine use throughout Maui County.

The election season is beginning to heat up, the economy is under fire and gas prices dominate the headlines. With so much on our minds, it often becomes easy to forget the important issues that existed before the recent political and economic melee. But there are some island residents who haven’t forgotten—and they are working day and night to resolve these issues. On Tuesday, Aug. 5, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui announced it has teamed up with the Partnership for a Drug-Free America to launch “Meth360,” a public awareness campaign that aims to reduce methamphetamine use throughout Maui County. Endorsed by the Office of the Mayor, Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) Inc.’s Being Empowered and Safe Together Reintegration Program (BEST) and The Institute for Family Enrichment (TIFFE), it is the first partnership of its kind in the State of Hawai‘i. The campaign, which is currently underway, will use the power of advertising—by sending anti-drug messages to Maui youth through professionally-produced media advertisements.

A program meant to educate youth and the community about the dangers of methamphetamine has lost state funding, forcing the county to turn to federal dollars to continue with projects.

The state Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs issued a letter to the county’s Behavioral Health Department, telling them to suspend activity within its Meth Action team and mentoring programs.
